One Farm. One Region. One Story.

Single origin coffees are the purest expression of specialty coffee. Unlike blends that combine beans from multiple origins for consistency, a single origin coffee comes from one specific farm, region, or cooperative — and it tastes like exactly where it was grown. Devil's Head's single origin lineup takes you on a world tour: from the creamy grape and walnut of a Guatemalan Finca La Union, to the honeysuckle florals and peach acidity of an Ethiopian Washed Danche, to the cacao and pipe tobacco of a Sumatran Mandehling. Each lot is seasonal and limited — when it sells out, it's gone until next harvest.

At Devil's Head Coffee roasts every batch right here in Calgary to highlight the distinct characteristics of each region and the uniqueness each has to offer. Single origin coffee is like a journey to each country — taking in what each has to offer is a small adventure in every cup.

Meet the Origins

  • Guatemala – Finca La Union (Medium-Light): Creamy body, grape sweetness, walnut finish. A balanced introduction to Central American single origins. Approachable and versatile — works with any brew method.

  • Nicaragua – Nuevo Segovia (Medium): Full body, molasses depth, dark chocolate. Rich and comforting — perfect for cool-weather mornings. Deep, satisfying sweetness.

  • Peru – Jhonny Saavedra El Acerillo (Dark): Cocoa, caramel, chocolate. A crowd-pleasing dark roast that doesn't sacrifice complexity. Works great in espresso — one of the few single origins that pulls a beautiful shot.

  • Rwanda – Lake Kivu (Medium): Chocolate, orange fruits, dried fruit sweetness. One of the most exciting origins in specialty coffee right now. Bright, fruity, complex — a revelation for people who think they don't like African coffees. Best enjoyed black, pour-over style.

  • Sumatra – Mandehling G1 Gayo (Medium-Dark): Cacao, lemon/lime acidity, pipe tobacco. Earthy, complex, and unmistakable. For experienced palates who love depth and intrigue in a cup. A bold, distinctive single origin.

  • Ethiopia – Washed Danche (Light): Honeysuckle florals, peach pleasing acidity. Elegant, tea-like, and unmistakably Ethiopian. The coffee that makes people fall in love with light roasts. Best enjoyed black, pour-over or Chemex.

Why Single Origin Matters

When you buy a single origin coffee, you're not just buying a flavor — you're supporting a specific farmer, a specific community, and a specific tradition. Devil's Head sources from farms and co-ops across the Americas and Africa, and roasts each lot to highlight what makes that region unique. The result is a coffee that's traceable, transparent, and genuinely unique.

These are seasonal, limited-release coffees — once sold out, they may not return until the next harvest. Buy extra when you find one you love.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does "natural" vs "washed" mean?

A: Natural process means the coffee cherry is dried whole, with the fruit still on the bean — this creates bold, fruity, sometimes fermented flavors. Washed process removes the fruit before drying, producing cleaner, brighter, more acidic coffees. Neither is superior — just different flavor experiences.

Q: Are single origin coffees seasonal?

A: Yes. Single origin coffees are harvested once or twice a year depending on the region. Devil's Head rotates stock based on what's fresh and available. Buy extra if you love a particular lot — it may not return until next harvest.

Q: Which single origin should I start with?

A: Guatemala for a balanced, approachable introduction. Ethiopia for something bright and floral. Peru for a rich dark roast. Rwanda for something fruity and exciting. Each origin offers a completely different experience.

Q: Is Devil's Head single origin coffee fresh?

A: Yes — roasted Monday to Friday in SE Calgary. Single origin lots are roasted as they arrive from origin, so you're always getting the freshest possible beans. This is the advantage of buying from a local micro-roaster.
