Kingdom Coffee started in 2017 with a $15,000 insurance payout Jesse Singleton's dad left him. Jim had spent 30 years homeless on Calgary's streets, hooked on heroin and crack, before a chance conversation at the Drop-In Centre steered him to the Calgary Dream Centre. He got clean, became a pastor, reconnected with his family — and then died in a workplace accident in 2015. Jesse and his wife Steph took that inheritance, bought a coffee roaster, and built what Jim's life became: a second chance, served one cup at a time.

The coffee comes from three Nicaraguan family farms Jesse visits himself — Byron and Ileana Corrales (Finca Los Pinos, 1,400 metres), Diego Chavarria (Matagalpa, 5,500 feet), and Don Gonzalo Dipito. Kingdom pays above commodity prices, cuts out every middleman, and publishes whose hands picked your beans. A portion of every bag helps Calgarians get off the street and into recovery. The Light is a natural-process light roast from Byron Corrales — dry fruit and citrus, built for pour-over. Bridge is the washed medium roast, also from Byron: dark chocolate, creamy body with a hint of guava. Honey is a honey-process medium from Don Gonzalo Dipito — dry fruit and toffee, flexible enough for any brew method. Dream (Cafe Diego) is a medium-dark from Diego Chavarria, sweet and caramelly with a creamy body that works black or with milk. Diego Chavarria runs a 300-hectare organic farm at 5,500 feet that produces about 160,000 pounds of green coffee a year. He provides housing and daily food for every family on his plantation. Byron Corrales funds post-secondary education for his employees' kids. Kingdom Coffee was the first Canadian roaster to carry Cafe Diego beans, and Jesse still goes back to shake their hands.
