Devil's Head Coffee started in a Bowness laundry room with a popcorn popper. Chris — a former environmental consultant — turned a rock-climbing injury into a roasting obsession. What began as a hobby for neighbours quickly grew as demand for freshly roasted, small-batch coffee outpaced what a laundry room could produce. Today Devil's Head Coffee operates a dedicated roastery and café in Calgary's Foothills Industrial Park, roasting on a 5 kg machine two to three times per week so every bag is as fresh as possible. No warehouses. No stale coffee. Just small-batch roasted beans, roasted in Calgary.

The People Behind the Roaster

Chris is the founder and head roaster. With a background in environmental consulting, he brings a scientific approach to roast profiling. He handles everything from green coffee sourcing to roasting, customer service, and running the mobile café. You will find him tinkering with espresso and roasting daily at the shop.

Tanis manages the books and events while juggling a full-time HR career. A self-described coffee lover who enjoys 15 quiet minutes each morning with her cup, she inspired Chris to pursue roasting seriously. Together they built Devil's Head Coffee from a home experiment into a Calgary institution.

Named After the Mountain

Devil's Head Coffee is named after Devil's Head Mountain in the Ghost River Wilderness, just west of Calgary. Every blend is named after a legendary climb or route: The Ghost, Alberta Jam, Morning Rise, The Real Big Drip. The label on every bag features a photo taken during their adventures — connecting each roast to the place that inspired it. This isn't mountain-themed marketing; it's a genuine reflection of who they are: outdoor people who roast coffee for other outdoor people.
