Which Chemex Size Is Right for You?

Chemex uses a "cup" measurement of approximately 5 oz (150 ml) per cup — smaller than a standard coffee mug (which is typically 10-12 oz). Here is how to choose:

  • 6-Cup (30 oz / ~3 mugs): Best for 1-2 daily coffee drinkers. The most popular size.
  • 8-Cup (40 oz / ~4 mugs): Best for 2-4 people or households with heavier consumption.
  • 10-Cup (50 oz / ~5 mugs): Best for 4+ people, entertaining, or offices.
  • Ottomatic 2.0: Best for those who want automated pour-over without sacrificing quality. Includes a 6-cup carafe.

About the Chemex Brewing Method

The Chemex brewing method is simple but produces exceptional results. Coarse-ground coffee is placed in a bonded paper filter. Hot water (195-205°F) is poured in a slow, circular motion over the grounds. The water extracts flavour as it passes through the filter and into the glass carafe below. The entire process takes 3-5 minutes.

Key to the Chemex method is the proprietary bonded filter, which is 20-30% heavier than standard paper filters. It removes bitter fats, acidity, and fine sediment, producing a cup that is clean, bright, and complex.
